An artist book by Catherine Mommsen Scott.
Cat. No.: J.4009
1935 is based on scrapbooks made by my mother and her sisters during an era when resources were tight and every scrap was treasured. 1935 is one of a kind, carefully and artfully handcrafted using paper, art board, yupo, mixed papers bound with Irish linen thread, gesso, acrylic, ink, gold leaf, encaustic wax and acrylics. Case-style binding.
The book is stuffed 52 pages (25 sheets plus end pages) of different papers, including handmade Nepalese paper, vellum, artist canvas, plain brown craft paper and other select handmade papers. Two of the pages are pocket pages: one holds my miniature glass paper abstract landscape. (2.25″ x 1.0″. Glass paper, ink, acrylic, gold leaf, embossing. Cat. No.: IN.40.00); the other holds another tiny original piece of my art.
Six of the pages are highly decorated: One two-page spread is “East of the Sun, West of the Moon”, my original 4.5″ x 2.5″ glass paper collage. A second two page spread is an untitled abstract encaustic painting with acrylic and gold leaf. “Cheek to Cheek” is paper and gauze embroidered with thread and beads. The sixth page is a period-appropriate photo in negative of a hospital nurse. The end pages are handmade Nepalese paper of gold and taupe in a brocade pattern. The headbands are of the same material.
This fully functional small artist book is designed to be an interactive fine art object. Use it as a scrapbook for tiny treasures such as stamps, ticket stubs, pressed flowers, a found earring. Use it as a journal to records thoughts, quotes, books or movies. Add your own drawing, sketches or paintings. The attached cord and bead closure features a beautiful blue-tone handmade bead from Carolyn Saxby Textiles which complements my own hand made beads and carefully chosen metal and glass beads.
The book comes beautifully packaged in a decorated box and includes a gift card. Like most books, it will not stand up to rigorous wear. Please treat it gently. Do not expose to moisture or extreme temperatures. The glassine slip papers will protect the pages during shipping and storage. Depending on humidity where you live, you may want to keep them in place when the book is tightly closed.
I want you to be completely satisfied with your miniature art. I will repair (or replace, at my discretion) any damage due to workmanship. If you have questions or comments at any time, pre- or post-purchase, I am available via email.
